1. Mechanical damage to platters and read heads
A classic HDD contains rotating platters and read heads that move just nanometers above the disk surface. Any impact or shock can cause the head to contact the platter – a so-called head crash. This type of damage is often fatal and recovering data from such a drive is very difficult.
How to prevent it:
- Never move a computer while the drive is operating
- Use quality PC cases with vibration dampening
- Place laptops down carefully and don't carry them while powered on
- Use protective cases when transporting external drives
2. Overheating of the hard drive
High temperature is a silent killer of hard drives. When an HDD operates at temperatures above 50 °C for extended periods, its lifespan is significantly shortened. Overheating causes component expansion, lubricant degradation in the bearings, and can lead to damage of the magnetic layer on the platters.
How to prevent it:
- Ensure adequate airflow inside the PC case
- Regularly clean fans and filters of dust
- Monitor drive temperature using programs such as CrystalDiskInfo
- If needed, add an additional fan or HDD cooler
- Don't leave a laptop on soft surfaces that block ventilation
3. Motor bearing wear
The motor that spins the platters of a hard drive contains bearings with a limited lifespan. After years of operation the bearings wear out, which manifests as unusual sounds – clicking, squealing, or grinding. If your drive starts making strange noises, that is a clear warning signal.
How to prevent it:
- Avoid frequent switching the computer on and off
- Set a reasonable drive sleep interval (not too short)
- Keep the drive in a horizontal position where possible
- Back up data regularly – bearing wear cannot be fully stopped
4. Damage caused by power outages
Sudden power cuts or voltage fluctuations can damage the drive's electronics and cause data corruption. If the drive is writing data when a power outage occurs, the file system may be damaged or files being written may be lost.
How to prevent it:
- Use a quality power supply unit (PSU) with protection circuits
- Invest in a UPS backup power source for important computers
- Use a surge protector
- Never disconnect an external drive without safely ejecting it first
5. Degradation of the magnetic layer and bad sectors
Bad sectors are damaged areas on the platter surface that cannot be reliably written to or read from. They arise from natural aging, but also from shocks, overheating, or manufacturing defects. A small number of bad sectors can be remapped by the drive, but an increasing count signals an approaching end of lifespan.
How to prevent it:
- Regularly check drive health using S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics
- Run a disk check (CHKDSK) at least once a month
- Watch for warning signs – slowdowns, freezes, read errors
- At the first signs of trouble, back up your data immediately
6. Damage to the drive's electronics
The control electronics on the underside of the HDD can fail due to overvoltage, static electricity, or a short circuit. This type of failure sometimes allows data recovery by replacing the PCB board, but this is a complex process.
How to prevent it:
- Ground yourself when handling a drive
- Don't place the drive on conductive surfaces
- Protect the computer from mains voltage surges
